If there is one key aspect of running a highly effective business development capability within any firm it is control, without which the outcome is very much like an orchestra without a conductor: just so much noise.
A commercial sales director provides a level of judgement and control that is beyond the experience of many professional services firms. They will:
Construct a BD facility which systematically finds new leads, converts them into clients and then maximises the revenue stream.
Run commercial sales meetings with the main business developers.
Build and maintain a single common pipeline of work to provide accurate forecasts.
Focus the business developer's efforts to where the most revenue can be gained.
Ensure each business developer has the right tools and skill set to work at maximum effectiveness.
Ensure that there is a maximum return from the business development budget and track all revenue back to its source.
