Maximising Performance

Leadership Case Study

Background

The subject was a senior manager working within the IT department of a major large insurance company, in charge of a large team of over 50 staff. The organisation consists of over 3,000 staff with 300 branches across the UK and serves over 870,000 customers. The organisation provides internal training for their employees, however, the subject was not able to get the help required internally so he made the decision to engage an external business coach.

The Challenges

The subject realised that in order to drive business performance and become a truly effective manager he needed to review the way he was working and address areas where he felt he was not as effective as he should be. He was looking for a way to define his career path and improve his leadership and management competencies, thereby making his team function more effectively and also achieve greater job satisfaction for himself.

The Approach

The Flair Coaching Practice had previously facilitated a one day workshop for his organisation and he liked the perspective that the coach brought to personal development. After speaking to the Flair Coach and discussing the programme content in greater detail he felt that Flair would provide him with a broad and effective behavioural based development programme that would enable him to achieve his objectives.

Over the course of the next 6 months he attended the four individual programme days and undertook a range of assignments designed to reinforce the new behaviours promoted by the programme. Working with his ‘Flair Buddy’ on the assignments involved regular bi-weekly contact and provided an impetus to keep up with the change process between each programme day. It was during these sessions where he reviewed what went well/what hadn’t gone well and was able to discuss alternative approaches to the challenges that he faced. During this period he began to see that real progress was being made towards his goals and he really began to maximise his own performance and enhance that of his team.

The Outcome

Over the duration of the programme the manager’s development efforts succeeded on all counts, as evidenced by the feedback from senior management, his team and also his customers. The practical tools used within Flair have helped him to develop and become a more effective manager, leading to a significantly enhanced team performance. Based on his team’s improvement he has now been asked to lead departmental wide efforts across his Group’s function.

Following his completion of the Flair programme his attitude towards personal development has also altered, having benefitted signifcantly from attending the programme he now takes the view that it is never too late to start the journey.
